As 2024 comes to a close, New Delhi remains gripped by a relentless cold wave accompanied by dense fog. On New Year’s Eve, the national capital experienced another chilly morning with limited visibility, adding to the seasonal challenges faced by residents.
Foggy Start to New Year
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cloudy skies for December 31, with temperatures ranging between a minimum of 10.05°C and a maximum of 20.84°C. For January 1, the temperatures are expected to rise slightly to 13.57°C (minimum) and 22.18°C (maximum).
Despite the minor uptick, IMD predicts that dense fog conditions will persist over the next couple of days, significantly impacting visibility and keeping daytime temperatures low across Northwest India. However, some respite is expected as the fog is likely to improve starting January 3.
Air Quality Deteriorates
After brief relief due to recent rains, Delhi’s air quality has worsened again, falling back into the ‘poor’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 236 at 8 a.m. on December 31, reflecting a spike from earlier in the week.
The combination of cold wave conditions and declining air quality has posed significant challenges for residents, especially as they prepare to ring in the New Year.
Looking Ahead
While the current cold spell has caused discomfort, the IMD forecasts a gradual rise in temperatures by the second week of January, bringing much-needed relief to the region. Meanwhile, residents are advised to take precautions against the cold and poor air quality as they navigate the New Year celebrations.
