In a significant pre-election announcement, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Arvind Kejriwal unveiled a major healthcare initiative for senior citizens. As part of the upcoming “Sanjeevani Yojana,” individuals aged 60 and above will receive free medical treatment at both government and private hospitals across Delhi, if AAP retains power in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Addressing the announcement, Kejriwal emphasized the importance of supporting the elderly, acknowledging their contribution to the nation’s progress. “It is now our duty to take care of you. You people have worked hard to take the country forward,” he said, underscoring the government’s commitment to the welfare of senior citizens.
The AAP’s healthcare plan promises to remove any upper limit on the cost of treatment, providing free access to medical care for senior citizens. Kejriwal also revealed that the registration process for the scheme would begin in the coming days, with AAP volunteers visiting homes to assist with registration. Senior citizens will be issued a card, which they must keep safe for future use.
“We are ready to implement this policy as soon as we come into power after the elections,” Kejriwal affirmed, giving a clear indication of his party’s priorities for the upcoming term.
The announcement comes as Delhi prepares for elections in February 2025. AAP has already released the list of candidates for all 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly. Kejriwal confirmed he will contest from his New Delhi constituency, while Delhi Chief Minister Atishi will run from Kalkaji.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called a preparatory meeting this week to finalize the schedule for the elections. The much-anticipated dates for the polls are expected to be announced shortly after the meeting.
This bold healthcare promise for senior citizens is likely to be a major talking point in the run-up to the Delhi elections, with many residents hopeful of receiving much-needed support from the government.
