Following a deadly terrorist ambush in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on June 9, where nine people lost their lives and 41 were injured after a bus carrying pilgrims was targeted, the Union Home Ministry has assigned the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to lead the investigation.
The attack occurred as the bus, carrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi, was traveling from the Shiv Khori temple to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra. Terrorists opened fire on the 53-seater bus, causing it to plunge into a deep gorge.
The decision to transfer the investigation to the NIA came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s review of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in light of the upcoming annual Amarnath yatra. This move reflects the seriousness with which the government is addressing terrorist threats and ensuring justice for the victims of such attacks.
Recent incidents, including the attack on the bus in Reasi district and other terror activities in the region, have heightened concerns regarding security in the Union Territory. On June 11, terrorists targeted a joint checkpost of the Rashtriya Rifles and police in Bhaderwah, while another attack on a search party in the Gandoh area of Doda district resulted in injuries to seven security personnel.
The NIA’s involvement underscores the need for a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the bus attack and related terrorist activities. The agency’s expertise and resources will be crucial in uncovering the perpetrators and bringing them to justice, ensuring that such heinous acts do not go unpunished in the region.
