NR Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, has made headlines by gifting shares worth over ₹240 crore to his four-month-old grandson, Ekagrah Rohan Murty. This generous gesture adds Ekagrah to the list of millionaires in India at a very young age.
According to an exchange filing, Ekagrah now owns 15,00,000 shares of Infosys, representing a 0.04 percent stake in the company. The transaction was conducted “off-market,” as revealed in the filing.
This move has led to a reduction in Mr. Murthy’s holding in Infosys from 0.40 percent to 0.36 percent, equivalent to 1.51 crore shares.
Ekagrah was born in November 2023 to Rohan Murty and Aparna Krishnan, making him the third grandchild of Narayana and Sudha Murty. The couple is also grandparents to two daughters of Akshata Murty and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Ekagrah’s name, inspired by Arjun’s character in the Mahabharata, means unwavering focus and determination in Sanskrit.
Infosys, which had a modest beginning with an investment of ₹10,000 in 1981, has grown into India’s second-largest tech company.
Sudha Murty, known for her prolific writing and philanthropy, played a crucial role in the early days of Infosys by bootstrapping the company with her savings. After leading the Infosys Foundation for over 25 years, she retired in December 2021 and continues her charitable work through her family’s foundation. She also recently became a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Last year, Narayana Murthy sparked a debate by advocating for young people to work 70 hours a week during a podcast. While some agreed with his views, others raised concerns about potential burnout. In response to the criticism, Mr. Murthy defended his statement, noting that many “good people” and “NRIs” supported his perspective.
This significant gift of shares to Ekagrah highlights the Murthy family’s commitment to philanthropy and their vision for the future generation.
