Delhi experienced severe weather conditions on Tuesday evening, leading to significant flooding and widespread disruptions across the city. The India Meteorological Office reported that clouds had converged over Delhi from all directions, resulting in intense rainfall that led to extensive waterlogging and traffic jams.
Several areas in Delhi were heavily affected, with numerous vehicles stranded on waterlogged roads. Reports indicate that at least 10 flights scheduled to land in Delhi, including one from Tokyo, were diverted due to the adverse weather conditions. The heavy downpour also led to the collapse of several houses, with one person trapped in Chandni Chowk’s Sadar Bazar.
The situation was particularly dire in areas such as Connaught Place, Minto Road, and the Moti Bagh flyover, which saw significant waterlogging and traffic congestion. The underpass at Minto Bridge was closed due to accumulated water, and visuals from Chandni Chowk showed shopkeepers’ goods floating amidst the floodwaters. Additionally, tree falls were reported across various parts of the city.
The flooding brought back painful memories of a recent incident in Rajinder Nagar, where three students lost their lives due to water accumulation in the basement of a coaching center. The same road where the coaching center is located was once again inundated, with people seen wading through waist-deep water.
In response to the flooding, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has advised all officers to remain vigilant and address issues related to waterlogging, particularly around sensitive sites such as coaching centers. The government has also issued advisories to ensure minimal disruption to the public.
The India Meteorological Office forecasted light to moderate rainfall with isolated intense spells over the next two hours. The weather office also reported significant rainfall totals, with Mayur Vihar receiving 119 mm and Noida recording 118 mm of rain between 8:30 AM and 8:30 PM.
Several airlines, including Air India, Vistara, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, have issued travel advisories due to flight diversions and delays. Passengers are advised to check their flight status and allow extra time for travel. An Air India flight from Tokyo was redirected to Jaipur, while Vistara’s flight UK998 from Pune to Delhi was diverted to Lucknow.
