Light Rain Expected in Delhi, Air Quality to Improve

Delhi is bracing for light rain on Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday, which is expected to offer some respite from the city’s ongoing air quality woes. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light showers later in the evening, which may help improve the region’s air quality that remained in the “very poor” category on Monday morning.

The National Capital Region (NCR), including key areas like Safdarjung and Palam, experienced dense fog in the early hours of Monday, significantly reducing visibility. At around 4:30 am, visibility at Palam Airport dropped to just 50 metres from 500 metres at 3:30 am. However, conditions began to improve from 6 am, and no flights were diverted or cancelled, although some delays were reported at the Delhi Airport.

The minimum temperature on Monday morning dropped to 10.2°C, which was two degrees above normal, compared to 11.8°C on Sunday. The IMD predicted mostly cloudy skies throughout the day, with the maximum temperature expected to hover between 21-23°C. On Sunday, the temperature had peaked at 22.8°C.

While Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) showed slight improvement, it still remained in the “very poor” category, registering an AQI of 306 at 9 am. This was a marginal improvement from 326 on Sunday at 4 pm. With the incoming rain, the AQI is expected to improve further, offering temporary relief to residents.

Authorities have urged people to continue exercising caution due to the persistent poor air quality and to avoid outdoor activities if possible.
