Heavy Rain Causes Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos in Delhi; More Showers Expected

Delhi faced significant disruptions on Friday as heavy rainfall led to extensive waterlogging and severe traffic jams across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more showers, with the city remaining under a yellow alert for adverse weather conditions.

Rainfall began in the afternoon, affecting central and southern parts of the national capital. The IMD’s latest update predicts that light to moderate rain is likely to continue throughout the day. Late-night showers on Thursday had already caused substantial waterlogging, further exacerbating traffic issues.

The minimum temperature in the city dropped to 21.4 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees below the seasonal average. Rainfall data collected over the past 24 hours shows varying amounts across different areas: Safdarjung recorded 29.6 mm, Ridge station 69.4 mm, Delhi University 56.5 mm, Lodhi Road 28.2 mm, Aya Nagar 19.5 mm, and Palam 18 mm.

The heavy rains led to severe traffic congestion as several major roads were submerged. The Delhi Traffic Police issued warnings via social media, advising commuters to avoid affected routes and seek alternate paths. Key trouble spots included NH-48 near Dhaula Kuan, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Main Kanjhawla Road, Outer Ring Road, Rohtak Road, MB Road, Guru Teg Bahadur Road, GTK Road, and the Main Outer Ring Road.

Traffic disruptions were notably severe due to waterlogging near GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri Metro Station, and areas around Nagin Lake Apartments. The traffic situation was compounded by high humidity levels, which were recorded at 96 percent.

In light of the continuing adverse weather, the IMD has forecasted a generally cloudy sky with ongoing light to moderate rain throughout the day. The authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and plan their travel accordingly to avoid delays and disruptions.
