Heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has wreaked havoc in Gujarat and southern Rajasthan, leading to the tragic loss of at least 17 lives and leaving 11 people missing. The relentless downpour, which has continued for the third consecutive day, has caused severe flooding and other rain-related incidents in the affected areas.
Overflowing Reservoirs and Rising Water Levels
Government officials have reported that most reservoirs in the rain-impacted regions are overflowing, raising concerns about further flooding in the coming days. The state disaster management teams in Gujarat have relocated approximately 6,000 people to safer locations as water levels in dams and rivers continue to rise.
Rain-Related Casualties and Displacement
In Gujarat, the rainfall has impacted nearly 20,000 people. On Monday alone, seven people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents, including wall collapses in Gandhinagar, Kheda, and Vadodara districts, a fatal tree fall in Anand district, and two drownings. As a precautionary measure, the administrations in several districts, including Panchmahal, Navsari, Valsad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Kheda, Gandhinagar, Botad, and Aravali, have moved hundreds of residents to safer locations.
The rainfall has been particularly heavy in Tankara taluka in Morbi district, which received 347 mm of rain in 24 hours, the highest in the state. Other regions, including Morva Hadaf in Panchmahal, Nadiad in Kheda, and Borsad in Anand, also experienced significant rainfall, further exacerbating the flooding.
High Alert in Gujarat
The Gujarat state government has issued high alerts for 96 reservoirs that are flowing above danger levels and has warned of potential flooding in the near future. Additionally, 24 out of 251 talukas in the state received more than 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, contributing to the worsening situation.
Impact in Southern Rajasthan
In southern Rajasthan, the heavy rainfall has also led to fatalities and widespread disruption. Two people reportedly died, and three others were swept away by floodwaters. In Udaipur’s Keluposh village, a wall collapse resulted in one fatality, while a retired army personnel in Ajmer died after slipping into an open pit.
