In a significant move aimed at enhancing governance and accelerating development in Ladakh, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the creation of five new districts in the union territory. Home Minister Amit Shah shared the decision on Monday, attributing it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and prosperous Ladakh.
Amit Shah took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the formation of the new districts, which include Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. The creation of these districts is expected to improve governance by bringing administrative services closer to the residents of even the most remote areas.
“In pursuit of Narendra Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny. The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” Amit Shah wrote on X.
Before this announcement, Ladakh comprised only two districts—Leh and Kargil—each governed by autonomous district councils. With the addition of the five new districts, Ladakh will now have a total of seven districts.
Ladakh, which was part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir until 2019, became a union territory following the revocation of Article 370 by the Central government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This decision not only removed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir but also bifurcated the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Ladakh is a globally renowned tourist destination, famous for its stunning landscapes and challenging motorcycle routes, attracting thousands of adventurers each year. However, its strategic importance has grown in recent years due to rising tensions with China, particularly in the eastern parts of the region.
The creation of these new districts is expected to play a critical role in strengthening governance and ensuring that development initiatives reach all corners of Ladakh, thereby fostering growth and stability in this geopolitically sensitive area.
