The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Karnataka has filed a chargesheet against former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in connection with a case alleging sexual assault of a minor girl. The chargesheet was submitted in a special court handling cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The case stems from an FIR filed by a 54-year-old woman earlier this year, accusing Yediyurappa of molesting her 17-year-old daughter during a meeting at his residence in Bengaluru’s Dollar Colony in February. Following the registration of the case by Sadashivanagar police in Bengaluru, the state’s Director General of Police transferred the investigation to the CID.
Yediyurappa, a senior BJP leader, has vehemently denied all allegations against him, stating that the accusations are part of a conspiracy. He was questioned by the CID for approximately three hours on June 17 in connection with the case. Earlier legal proceedings saw the Karnataka High Court issuing orders preventing the CID from arresting Yediyurappa.
Tragically, the mother of the victim, who filed the complaint, passed away last month due to lung cancer.
The charges against Yediyurappa include sections under the POCSO Act and Section 354A (Sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Recently, the victim’s brother filed a petition in court expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of the case and urged for Yediyurappa’s arrest and interrogation.
The allegations have sparked significant political controversy, with opposition leaders criticizing the BJP for what they perceive as inadequate action against Yediyurappa. Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, voiced concern over the Karnataka High Court’s decision to stay Yediyurappa’s arrest, suggesting it reflects selective justice.
As the legal process unfolds, the case remains a focal point of scrutiny, highlighting broader issues of justice and accountability in high-profile cases involving public figures.
