Delhi Urges Haryana for Water Release Amid Severe Crisis

Delhi is facing a severe water crisis, compounded by a scorching heatwave, prompting Delhi’s minister Atishi to appeal to Haryana for water release on “humanitarian grounds.” The situation has escalated to such an extent that the Supreme Court has intervened, directing Himachal Pradesh to release 137 cusecs of surplus water to Delhi, with a directive to Haryana to facilitate its flow.

The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the gravity of the water scarcity issue, labeling it an “existential problem” for Delhi residents. Himachal Pradesh has confirmed releasing the allocated water, but its passage to Delhi hinges on cooperation from Haryana.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government in Delhi has been vocal in accusing Haryana, governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of withholding Delhi’s rightful share of water. The plea for water release on humanitarian grounds underscores the urgency of the situation, with residents grappling with the twin challenges of extreme weather conditions and a dwindling water supply.

Delhi’s appeal reflects the critical nature of the water crisis, highlighting the need for immediate and collaborative action to ensure the basic water needs of the national capital’s residents are met.
