YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, has been summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW) along with comedian Samay Raina and others over allegedly derogatory remarks made in an episode of the stand-up comedy show India’s Got Latent. The commission has directed them to appear on February 17.
Apart from Allahbadia and Raina, the summons also includes social media influencer Apoorva Makhija and the show’s producers, Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra. The NCW has condemned the remarks, stating that they violate the dignity and respect owed to individuals in a society that upholds equality and mutual respect.
Police Complaints & Government Action
Following the controversial remarks, police complaints have been filed against Allahbadia, Raina, and Makhija in Mumbai and Guwahati. Additionally, the government has sent a notice to YouTube, prompting the removal of the video from the platform.
Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has indicated that Allahbadia may also be summoned by a parliamentary panel to explain his comments. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she stated, “Any abusive language in the name of comedy crosses limits and is not acceptable… You get a platform, that doesn’t mean you will utter anything.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also weighed in on the controversy, warning of potential action. “Everyone has freedom of speech… but this ends when we encroach on others’ freedom. If anyone crosses that limit, action will be taken,” he said.
Ranveer Allahbadia Issues Apology
Amidst the growing backlash, Allahbadia has issued a public apology, acknowledging his lapse in judgment. “My comment wasn’t just inappropriate… it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte, and I am just here to say sorry,” he said in a video message.
He further clarified that he does not wish to use his platform for such content. “I am not going to give any context or justification. I am just here to apologize. It wasn’t cool on my part,” he added.
The controversy has reignited the debate over the boundaries of comedy content and responsible use of social media influence, with many calling for stricter regulation of online content.
