With Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal still incarcerated, Manish Sisodia, his close ally and former deputy, has been appointed to lead the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi and Haryana. Sisodia, who was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court, will oversee the party’s strategies as it gears up for crucial electoral battles.
Sisodia, who spent 17 months in Tihar jail on charges related to corruption and money laundering in the Delhi liquor policy case, walked free on Friday, providing a much-needed boost to the AAP. His release comes at a critical time as the party grapples with the political fallout from Kejriwal’s detention.
The Supreme Court’s bail decision allows Sisodia to return to his role as a key strategist for the party. Today, he is scheduled to meet with senior party members at his residence to discuss and plan the campaign ahead of the assembly elections. The elections in Haryana are slated for later this year, while Delhi’s polls are anticipated at the start of 2025.
Manish Sisodia, who was instrumental in the rise of AAP following the 2011 anti-corruption movement, has been credited with significant contributions to Delhi’s governance and education sector. Despite his resignation from the Delhi cabinet in February 2023, following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Sisodia remains a pivotal figure in AAP’s political landscape.
During his tenure, Sisodia held multiple crucial portfolios, including education, finance, planning, and vigilance services, and played a significant role in reforming Delhi’s education system. His departure from the cabinet came amid allegations of irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy 2021-22.
