The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rohini MLA Vijender Gupta as the new Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, party leaders confirmed on Thursday.
A three-time MLA from Rohini, Gupta has a long political history in the Delhi Assembly. He previously served as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) from 2015 to 2020 and briefly resumed the role in June 2024 until the end of the last assembly term. As LoP, he was a vocal critic of the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Arvind Kejriwal, raising concerns over issues such as the alleged liquor policy scam and the non-tabling of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports.
Gupta emphasized the BJP’s commitment to accountability and transparency, stating that the first session of the newly elected Assembly will see the presentation of the CAG reports. “The assembly session will be convened next week for the oath-taking of MLAs. In the first session, the CAG reports will be tabled in the House to expose the corruption of AAP,” he told Hindustan Times.
However, an official from the Delhi government clarified that the exact schedule for the first session is yet to be finalized, though it is expected to be announced in the coming days.
