Three people, including two brothers, tragically lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh after their car, relying on GPS navigation, drove onto a damaged bridge and plunged 50 feet into the river below. The incident occurred early this morning in Faridpur, as the vehicle was traveling from Bareilly to Dataganj in the Badaun district.
The car, a Wagon R, was reportedly misled by Google Maps. According to authorities, the bridge had been damaged earlier in the year due to flooding, causing part of it to collapse into the river. However, this critical update had not been reflected in the GPS system, leading the driver to unwittingly drive onto the unsafe bridge.
Villagers who witnessed the incident spotted the car submerged in the Ramganga river and immediately alerted the police. Tragically, when rescue teams arrived, all three individuals inside the vehicle were already confirmed dead. The victims included two brothers, whose family members expressed grief and blamed the authorities for the lack of proper safety measures.
Circle Officer Ashutosh Shivam explained that the collapse of the bridge’s front portion earlier this year had not been updated in GPS systems, leaving drivers unaware of the danger. Furthermore, the absence of barricades or warning signs around the damaged bridge contributed to the tragedy.
The victims’ families have accused the local administration of negligence, citing the incomplete bridge and the lack of proper safety barriers. They have demanded that the district magistrate take action against those responsible to prevent such incidents in the future.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident, and steps are expected to be taken to ensure that GPS systems are updated with accurate information regarding road conditions.
