In the wake of the untimely demise of BRS MLA Lasya Nanditha in a tragic road accident, the Telangana government has announced stringent measures aimed at curbing accidents on the state’s roads. The move, announced a day after the fatal incident, underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring road safety, particularly for VIPs and public officials.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed that driving tests would be mandatory for drivers of ministers, MLAs, as well as officers holding positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS). The decision comes in response to concerns over inexperienced drivers being behind the wheel during long-distance journeys, which have resulted in unfortunate accidents claiming the lives of VIPs.
Highlighting the need for competent drivers for official vehicles, Minister Prabhakar emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals entrusted with driving responsibilities possess the necessary skills and experience to navigate safely on the roads.
The announcement follows the tragic incident involving BRS MLA Lasya Nanditha, whose life was cut short in a road accident near Patancheru in the neighbouring Sangareddy district. The lawmaker, representing Secunderabad Cantonment, succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision, prompting renewed calls for enhanced road safety measures.
In parallel to the government’s proactive measures, police authorities have initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Personal Assistant who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident had their statement recorded before a magistrate as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The sudden loss of MLA Lasya Nanditha has sent shockwaves across the political landscape of Telangana, with colleagues and constituents mourning the tragic loss of a dedicated public servant. As the state grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event, efforts to prevent similar accidents in the future have taken on added urgency, underscoring the importance of prioritizing road safety initiatives across all levels of governance.
As investigations continue and preventive measures are implemented, the memory of MLA Lasya Nanditha serves as a poignant reminder of the need for concerted action to safeguard lives on Telangana’s roads.
