“Telangana Appoints 10 IAS Officers to Monitor Summer Drinking Water Supply Amid Rising Temperatures”

Date:

In response to the escalating temperatures and increasing water demand during the summer months, the Telangana government has taken proactive measures to ensure adequate drinking water supply across the state, particularly in Hyderabad. A significant step in this direction is the appointment of 10 IAS officers as special officers tasked with monitoring the drinking water situation in both rural and urban areas.

According to an order issued by Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari on Wednesday, these Special Officers have been allocated different districts and are mandated to collaborate closely with district Collectors and state-level departments. Their responsibilities include overseeing the drinking water supply until the end of July 2024.

The directive emphasizes the need for these officers to guarantee a consistent and sufficient supply of drinking water to every household, be it rural or urban, on a daily basis. The Chief Secretary also underscored the option of utilizing agricultural wells on rent in case of disruptions in fresh water supply to villages, along with the provision of water through tankers as necessary.

Furthermore, efforts to maintain water infrastructure have been underway, with repairs and flushing of borewells completed in villages and wards to address leakages. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board have also assured that there is no shortage of drinking water in the city, citing multiple water sources such as the Nagarjuna Sagar and Yellampalli projects, Manjeera river, Singur dam, and Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs.

Despite these proactive measures, concerns about heat wave conditions persist, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in certain districts like Nizamabad. Heat wave conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets of Telangana on April 5 and April 6, highlighting the ongoing challenges associated with managing water resources and ensuring public well-being during the summer season.
