A police sub-inspector in Pune district, Somnath Zende, who gained notoriety for winning ₹1.5 crore on a fantasy sports platform, has been suspended from duty due to alleged misconduct. Zende, who served in the Pimpri Chinchwad police department, breached the code of conduct by participating in online gaming and subsequently providing an interview to the media while in police uniform.
The action against Zende was taken after concerns were raised about his involvement in online gaming and the resulting media interview, which generated negative reactions regarding the police department. Pune’s Pimpri Chinchwad police chief ordered an inquiry into the matter and instructed a deputy commissioner of police-rank official to conduct an investigation and submit a report.
Zende’s suspension is based on his engagement in online gaming, as well as his decision to speak to the media after securing a substantial prize through the online platform. His actions were seen as a violation of the code of conduct expected of police personnel.
This incident highlights the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding online gaming, especially for individuals holding positions in law enforcement and public service. It also serves as a reminder of the need for public servants to adhere to the established code of conduct to maintain the public’s trust and confidence in their roles.
