Widow of Captain Anshuman Singh Receives Kirti Chakra: Army Veterans React

President Droupadi Murmu recently conferred the prestigious Kirti Chakra posthumously upon Captain Anshuman Singh of the Army Medical Corps, 26th Battalion, The Punjab Regiment. This honor was bestowed in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and selfless actions during a critical fire incident, where he courageously rescued multiple individuals despite grave personal risk.

The ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, saw Captain Anshuman Singh’s widow, Smriti Singh, receiving the gallantry award on his behalf. Images and a video from the event were shared by the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s official channels, highlighting the solemn occasion where President Murmu honored several brave personnel for their exemplary valor.

Captain Anshuman Singh’s heroic efforts took place during an unfortunate fire outbreak at an Indian Army ammunition dump in Siachen in July 2023. Acting swiftly, he rescued fellow soldiers trapped in a fiber-glass hut engulfed in flames and also managed to salvage vital medicines from a nearby medical investigation shelter. Tragically, he sustained severe burns in the rescue operation and succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Reflecting on the significance of Captain Anshuman Singh’s sacrifice, retired Army veterans expressed profound respect and gratitude. Brigadier Hardeep Singh Sohi, himself a Shaurya Chakra awardee, conveyed, “The Nation Will Always Remain Indebted to You for Your Sacrifice. Jai Hind.” Wing Commander Aman Choudhary added poignant words, acknowledging Captain Anshuman Singh’s supreme sacrifice at Siachen Glacier.

The Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashoka Chakra, underscores the valor and dedication exhibited by Captain Anshuman Singh in the face of adversity. The award ceremony also saw the presentation of 26 Shaurya Chakras, further honoring bravery displayed across armed forces and paramilitary units.

The event not only commemorated Captain Anshuman Singh’s bravery but also underscored the nation’s commitment to honoring its heroes. As discussions continue on the sacrifices made by servicemen and their families, the ceremony serves as a poignant reminder of the profound responsibility to support and recognize those who safeguard the nation’s security and well-being.
