Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui has reportedly received threats from the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang, leading to heightened security measures by the Mumbai Police. The threats come amid an ongoing investigation into the gang’s suspected involvement in the murder of former minister Baba Siddique, raising serious concerns about the safety of the comedian.
Authorities confirmed that they had received information indicating a potential threat to Faruqui, prompting them to take immediate action. While the exact reasons behind the threats remain unclear, police officials are actively working to gather more information about the situation.
Faruqui, known for his stand-up performances, has faced significant backlash over the years from Hindu groups, who have accused him of hurting their sentiments during his shows. The comedian has consistently denied these allegations, asserting that he has not intended to offend anyone.
This alarming development follows the arrest of three suspected members of the Bishnoi gang, who were apprehended in connection with a recent shooting incident involving Baba Siddique in Bandra (East). The police’s quick response reflects the growing concern over the activities of the Bishnoi syndicate, which has been implicated in various high-profile crimes, including the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has previously registered cases against the Bishnoi gang and its associates under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Investigations have revealed that the gang has expanded its criminal networks across multiple states and has engaged in extensive extortion activities targeting businesses and professionals.
Moreover, the NIA’s findings indicate that some of the syndicate’s operations are coordinated from abroad, particularly Canada, and directed by leaders of organized crime groups operating within Indian prisons.
