Pune Minibus Fire: Disgruntled Driver Set Vehicle Ablaze, Killing Four Employees

A devastating fire that engulfed a minibus carrying employees of Vyoma Graphics in Pune’s Hinjawadi area was an act of sabotage by a vengeful driver, police officials confirmed on Thursday. The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, resulted in the deaths of four employees and left several others injured.

Deliberate Act of Arson

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vishal Gaikwad of Pimpri Chinchwad Police, the fire was not accidental but a planned act of revenge by the driver, Janardan Hambardekar.

“The accused driver had a dispute with some employees and wanted to take revenge. Additionally, he was disgruntled over a salary cut. However, the employees he held a grudge against were not among the deceased,” Gaikwad told PTI.

Minibus Engulfed in Flames

The minibus, owned by Vyoma Graphics, was carrying 14 employees to their workplace when it caught fire near Hinjawadi. Police investigations revealed that Hambardekar had procured benzene, a highly inflammable chemical, and had also placed a toner-wiping cloth in the vehicle.

“On Wednesday morning, as the bus neared its destination, he lit a match and set the cloth on fire,” a senior police official stated.

Driver Fled After Setting Fire

After setting the vehicle ablaze, Hambardekar jumped off the moving bus, which continued for about 100 meters before coming to a halt. He had already suffered burn injuries before escaping. The driver is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and will be arrested upon recovery.

Victims and Injuries

The fire claimed the lives of four employees who were seated at the rear of the bus and were unable to open the emergency exit door in time. The deceased have been identified as:

  • Shankar Shinde (63)
  • Rajan Chavan (42)
  • Gurudas Lokare (45)
  • Subhash Bhosale (44)

Additionally, six other passengers sustained burn injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the driver’s motives and any other potential accomplices. Police have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the tragic incident.
