Oscar-Nominated Live-Action Short Anuja Set to Release on Netflix on February 5

The highly acclaimed short film Anuja, which has earned an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards, is all set to make its global debut on Netflix. The streaming giant confirmed the exciting news on January 29, with the film scheduled for release on February 5.

Sharing the update with fans on Instagram, Netflix wrote, “ANUJA is a story of resilience, sisterhood, and hope. The Academy Award Nominated Live Action Short Film comes to Netflix on February 5,” alongside a clip from the film.

Directed by Adam J Graves, Anuja follows the poignant story of two sisters—Anuja (9) and Palak (17)—who work in a garment factory in Delhi. The bond between the siblings is tested when Anuja is given the opportunity to study at an elite boarding school, a decision that ultimately weighs heavily on her family’s future.

In one of the film’s memorable moments, Anuja, curious about what a boarding school is, asks her sister Palak. Palak responds, “Boarding school is a place where all smart girls go to study.” Anuja’s response, “What if I don’t want to be a smart girl?” provides a deeper insight into the character’s struggle with societal expectations.

The film stars Sajda Pathan as Anuja and Ananya Shanbhag as Palak, with Nagesh Bhosle playing a pivotal role. Anuja is produced by Mindy Kaling, Suchitra Mattai, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Devananda Graves, Krushan Naik, Ksheetij Saini, Alexandra Blaney, Michael Graves, and Aaron Kopp, with Priyanka Chopra and Anita Bhatia serving as executive producers.

Mindy Kaling expressed her excitement for the Netflix release, saying, “It is a dream come true to have Anuja on Netflix, where it can be seen by the worldwide audience it deserves. I’m so grateful to Bela Bajaria and Netflix India for seeing what I saw in this beautiful short film!”

Director Adam J Graves shared his gratitude for Anuja’s Netflix premiere, stating, “We are thrilled that the results of our collective dedication can finally be enjoyed by audiences around the world.”

As it makes its way to Netflix, Anuja is expected to touch hearts globally with its powerful portrayal of resilience, familial love, and the complexities of ambition. Fans and audiences worldwide are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to experience this Oscar-nominated gem.
