The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has chosen Sunetra Pawar, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. This decision, finalized in a recent party meeting, comes after Sunetra’s spirited contest in the Lok Sabha elections from the Baramati constituency, where she competed against Sharad Pawar’s daughter, Supriya Sule, ultimately losing by a significant margin.
Sunetra’s nomination is viewed as a strategic move by the NCP to bolster its position in the Baramati region, especially after the intense electoral battle in Baramati during the Lok Sabha polls. Despite her loss to Supriya Sule, Sunetra’s candidacy for the Rajya Sabha seat underscores the party’s commitment to supporting key family members and reinforcing local political ties.
An NCP insider, speaking anonymously, stated, “The party has decided to rehabilitate her. It will also help in strengthening the party’s position in Baramati after what all has happened in the polls.” Sunetra’s role will extend beyond the Rajya Sabha candidacy as she is expected to actively campaign for party chief Ajit Pawar in the upcoming state assembly elections, allowing him to focus on broader campaign efforts.
The decision to nominate Sunetra Pawar for the Rajya Sabha seat also reflects the party’s preference over other contenders, including Parth Pawar, Sameer Bhujbal, and Baba Siddique. Parth Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s elder son, had expressed interest in the seat and even held discussions with senior NCP leaders regarding his candidacy. However, the party’s decision to select Sunetra highlights its strategic priorities and emphasis on consolidating support in key regions.
The Rajya Sabha election, scheduled for June 25, will see Sunetra Pawar vying for the single seat. Her candidacy not only signals a familial connection within the NCP leadership but also indicates a focused effort by the party to fortify its political presence in Baramati and surrounding areas.
