Karnataka Minister for Woman and Child Welfare, Laxmi Hebbalkar, sustained minor injuries in a car accident on a highway near Kittur, Belgavi district, early this morning. The incident occurred around 5 am when the minister’s Toyota Innova HyCross swerved and crashed into a tree.
Hebbalkar, who was traveling with her brother, Channaraj Hattiholi, a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, was returning from Bengaluru after attending a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting. According to the police, the driver of the vehicle lost control while attempting to avoid hitting a dog that had suddenly crossed the road.
The front part of the vehicle suffered extensive damage, with visuals from the scene showing the extent of the crash. However, the impact of the collision was significantly reduced due to the airbags in the vehicle, which likely prevented more severe injuries.
Hebbalkar, aged 49, sustained a mild fracture in her leg, while her brother, Mr. Hattiholi, sustained a minor injury to his head. Both were rushed to the hospital immediately, and their conditions are reportedly stable. Hebbalkar is expected to be discharged in the next two days, according to medical sources.
The incident has drawn attention to the challenges of road safety and the unforeseen circumstances that can lead to accidents. Authorities have confirmed the ongoing investigation into the details of the crash.
The public and political leaders have expressed their concern and sent well wishes for the speedy recovery of both Laxmi Hebbalkar and her brother following the unfortunate incident.
