In a recent incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, an SUV marked with ‘Police’ and equipped with a siren was vandalized by a group of Kanwariyas during the Kanwar Yatra procession. The incident occurred near the Duhai metro station around 10 a.m.
The vehicle, a Mahindra Bolero, was reportedly driven by Avnish Tyagi and was identified as belonging to the Power Corporation Vigilance, not the police as initially presumed. According to the Ghaziabad Police, the Bolero had entered a reserved lane, leading to the confrontation with the Kanwariyas.
Visuals from the scene depict the Bolero being surrounded by individuals wielding sticks and baseball bats. The assailants damaged the vehicle’s headlights and windshields and pushed it onto its side. Notably, no one was inside the vehicle at the time of the vandalism.
The Kanwar Yatra is a significant pilgrimage for devotees of Lord Shiva, involving the collection and transportation of sacred water from rivers to Shiva shrines over hundreds of kilometers. This period, which typically falls between July and August, is marked by worship, fasting, and pilgrimage in devotion to Shiva.
The Ghaziabad Police have reported that the situation has been addressed, with an investigation currently underway. The driver, Avnish Tyagi, has been taken into custody, and the vehicle has been seized for further examination.
