Janata Dal (Secular) MLC Suraj Revanna, who was arrested last month in connection with a sexual assault case, has been granted conditional bail by a Bengaluru court. The decision follows his arrest in June on allegations of sexually assaulting a male worker within the party.
The 36-year-old Suraj Revanna, grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, is subject to several stringent conditions. He is prohibited from threatening or contacting the complainant, either directly or indirectly. Suraj must also comply with the investigation by presenting himself before the investigating officer whenever required and on the second Sunday of each month.
In addition, the court has mandated that Suraj report to the authorities between 9 am and 5 pm for six months or until the charge sheet is filed. He is also required to surrender his passport and seek written permission from the court before leaving the state.
Suraj Revanna faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 377 (unnatural offences), Section 342 (wrongful confinement), Section 506 (criminal intimidation), and Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). He has denied the charges of sexual assault, claiming instead that the complainant attempted to extort ₹5 crore from him. This has led to the complainant being booked for extortion based on a counter-complaint by Suraj’s close aide.
The controversy surrounding Suraj Revanna is compounded by previous allegations against his younger brother Prajwal Revanna, who was arrested on charges of rape and sexual abuse. Their father, HD Revanna, is currently out on bail following his arrest related to the kidnapping of one of Prajwal’s accusers.
