Tragedy in Jalgaon: 12 Dead After Panic Erupts from Fire Rumor on Pushpak Express

A devastating tragedy unfolded in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, when rumors of a fire led to widespread panic among passengers on the Pushpak Express. The incident, which occurred between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora, claimed the lives of 12 people, with several others injured.

The chain of events began when passengers, having heard sparks and smoke emanating from one of the general coaches of the train, believed a fire had broken out. A witness, Vishal Yadav, described the horrifying scene to NDTV, stating, “Everyone began jumping on the tracks after the fire rumor spread. Those who jumped onto the tracks were tragically run over by a fast-moving train.”

The panic intensified when a train traveling in the opposite direction, the Karnataka Express, arrived on the adjacent track. This caused a stampede-like situation, further escalating the chaos as passengers attempted to flee. Many, including Mr. Yadav, who was injured in the incident, recounted the harrowing moments as they desperately tried to escape the unfolding disaster.

According to railway officials, the preliminary investigation suggests that the sparks and smoke inside the Pushpak Express were due to either a “hot axle” or “brake binding,” causing a false alarm of fire. The passengers, fearing the worst, started to exit the train, unaware that the arrival of the Karnataka Express would exacerbate the disaster.

In the aftermath of the tragic event, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow and announced a financial aid of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Minister Girish Mahajan has taken charge of the rescue and relief operations in the area. Chief Minister Fadnavis confirmed his communication with district administration and police officials, ensuring that support and assistance would be provided to the victims.

As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on understanding how the panic unfolded and ensuring that such a disaster never happens again. The tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of how rumors and misinformation can escalate into disastrous consequences, and the importance of clear communication during emergencies.
