India has pledged significant financial assistance of Nepali ₹1,000 crore or $75 million to aid in the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by a recent earthquake in western Nepal. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced this commitment during a joint inauguration event with his Nepalese counterpart NP Saud, marking a collaborative effort to support Nepal’s recovery from the devastating earthquake.
Expressing India’s unwavering solidarity with Nepal, Jaishankar assured the nation of continued support and collaboration in its reconstruction efforts. This financial aid package aims to contribute to rebuilding efforts in Jajarkot and underscores India’s commitment to standing by the people of Nepal in times of crisis.
The announcement came amidst the joint inauguration of various reconstruction projects in Nepal, spanning the aftermath of earthquakes in 2015 and 2023. These projects encompassed the reconstruction of 25 schools, 32 health facilities, and a significant cultural heritage initiative, symbolizing the depth of collaboration between the two nations.
Highlighting India’s previous contributions, Jaishankar noted the completion of a project involving the construction of 50,000 houses in November 2021, along with the successful execution of 71 educational reconstruction projects. These initiatives, supported by grants and a line of credit amounting to $1 billion from India, demonstrate a sustained commitment to Nepal’s post-disaster recovery.
India’s swift response to the recent earthquake included immediate emergency relief efforts, with five installments of aid delivered, including essential supplies and prefabricated houses. Beyond immediate assistance, India emphasized the importance of connectivity and educational empowerment through scholarships and capacity-building programs, aiming to uplift the younger generation in Nepal.
Saud, the Nepalese Foreign Minister, expressed gratitude for India’s substantial support, acknowledging its transformative impact on various sectors like infrastructure, health sciences, energy connectivity, and cultural ties. He underscored the deepened connection between the two countries, emphasizing mutual growth and prosperity as close neighbors.
Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to redefining its relations with neighboring countries, particularly Nepal, based on the principles of collective development and trust. He emphasized the collaborative journey envisioned under the motto “sabka saath, sabka vikaas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayas,” stressing the inclusive growth of both nations.
The comprehensive development cooperation between India and Nepal signifies not only a strengthening of historical ties but also a promising future built on mutual progress and shared values. As the reconstruction efforts gather momentum, the partnership between the two nations is poised to drive socio-economic development and foster enduring bilateral relations.
