Heatwave Easing Across India as IMD Predicts Change in Weather Patterns

Date:

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a relief from the heatwave that has gripped the nation, with the exception of West Rajasthan and Kerala which remain hotspots. While West Rajasthan is still under a heatwave alert, the IMD has downgraded it to a yellow alert due to mitigating factors. The change in weather is attributed to a strong moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring thunderstorm activity across various regions.

IMD scientist Soma Sen stated that maximum temperatures in Kerala are expected to be above normal, with Thrissur and Palakkad reaching 39 degrees Celsius and other districts experiencing temperatures three to five degrees Celsius higher than usual. Multiple weather systems are forecasted to influence different parts of the country, bringing rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

In West Bengal and Sikkim, fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and squally winds is expected from May 9 to May 12 due to cyclonic circulations and troughs. Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha are also expected to experience scattered to fairly widespread rainfall during this period.

Central and western India, including Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh, may witness isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds from May 9 to May 13 due to a cyclonic circulation and troughs. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in East Madhya Pradesh and Marathwada, with the possibility of hailstorm activity in some areas.

Southern India, particularly South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Kerala, and Mahe, is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall along with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall during various periods in May.

In northern regions, including Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, a Western Disturbance coupled with a trough is likely to bring scattered to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and hailstorm activity over certain areas from May 9 to May 13.
