In a tragic incident in Pune, a 17-year-old boy driving his father’s ₹2.5 crore Porsche has been accused of drunk driving, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Eye-witnesses reported that the luxury car was traveling at 200 km per hour when it collided with a two-wheeler carrying IT professionals Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24 years old. The impact flung the victims into the air and into parked cars, killing Koshta on the spot and Awadhiya later in the hospital.
Friends of the teenager have claimed that he was heavily intoxicated at the time of the crash. Eyewitnesses also reported that the boy appeared drunk when he was detained by an angry crowd shortly after the incident. CCTV footage from a city bar revealed the boy and his friends consuming alcohol hours before the crash, leading to the arrest of the bar owner and staff for serving liquor to a minor. In Maharashtra, the legal drinking age is 25.
Controversy has arisen over the boy’s blood alcohol level, especially after two arresting officers were suspended for failing to conduct an immediate blood test. Further investigation revealed potential tampering with the boy’s blood sample at Sassoon Hospital. Two doctors and a ward boy have been accused of manipulating the tests in exchange for a ₹3 lakh bribe from the boy’s family. The blood sample was allegedly swapped, and the boy’s actual sample was found discarded in a hospital dustbin.
The doctors involved, Dr. Ajay Tawade and Dr. Hari Harnor, along with the ward boy, are in police custody. Dr. Tawade allegedly had multiple phone conversations with the boy’s father on the day of the incident, possibly discussing the bribe. The father, a prominent real estate mogul, was arrested a day after the crash while attempting to escape. He faces charges of endangering his son’s health, forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. The boy’s grandfather, linked to gangster Chhota Rajan, was also arrested on charges of kidnapping and wrongful confinement.
The teen was initially released on bail within 15 hours of his arrest, causing public outrage. The Juvenile Justice Board later modified its decision, sending him to a remand home until Wednesday. The boy has been charged with drunk driving, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a ₹10,000 fine for a first-time offender. Authorities are considering a more serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, depending on whether he is tried as an adult.
The Pune Police, criticized for their handling of the investigation, have pledged to build a “watertight” case against the teen, even without the blood tests. An application to try him as an adult is pending with the Juvenile Board. The case continues to draw significant public and media attention as authorities seek justice for the victims.
