New Delhi: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, Parvesh Verma, the party’s newly elected MLA, took a dig at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal with a shayari-laden post on social media.
Mr. Verma, a former two-time Lok Sabha MP from West Delhi, emerged as a “giant slayer” by defeating Mr. Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, a seat the AAP leader had held for three consecutive terms. His victory contributed to the BJP’s landslide win, ending AAP’s 10-year rule in the national capital.
Sharing a 33-second video on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Verma posted an old clip of Mr. Kejriwal challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I want to challenge Modi ji, you cannot defeat AAP in Delhi in this birth. You would have to be reborn,” the AAP leader was heard saying in the video. The footage then cut to Prime Minister Modi addressing a rally, where he called AAP a “disaster” and urged voters to bring change. The final segment of the clip displayed the election results, with BJP securing 48 seats while AAP managed 22.
Alongside the video, Mr. Verma posted a modified couplet inspired by renowned Pakistani poet Habib Jalib:
“Ik shaksh jo yahan takht-nasheen tha, usko apne khuda hone pe bohut yakeen tha.”
(“The one who sat on the throne believed himself to be God.”)
The lines, frequently cited to critique autocratic leadership, added a poetic sting to Mr. Verma’s political jibe. Jalib, a revolutionary poet born in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur in 1928, was known for his opposition to military rule and oppression in Pakistan. His poetry gained prominence during General Ayub Khan’s coup and later protests against dictatorship.
With his high-profile victory, Mr. Verma is now being considered a frontrunner for the Delhi Chief Minister’s post. However, the BJP is yet to announce its CM pick. Party president JP Nadda met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday to discuss government formation and the swearing-in ceremony. Sources indicate that the oath-taking event may be scheduled after Prime Minister Modi returns from his official visit to the United States.
As Delhi’s political landscape undergoes a historic shift, all eyes remain on the BJP’s next move and the formal announcement of its leadership in the capital.
