Delhi’s Air Quality Remains ‘Severe’, AQI Exceeds 450 in Several Locations

Delhi's air quality continued to deteriorate, remaining in the 'severe plus' category on Friday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings exceeding 450 in several areas. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's 24-hour average AQI had reached an alarming 451 by 4 pm on Thursday, indicating hazardous air conditions across the city.

Delhi woke up to a blanket of moderate fog on Tuesday, as the city continued to grapple with severe air pollution. The air quality index (AQI) stood at 426 at 9 am, classified as ‘severe,’ prompting the reimposition of restrictions under stages 3 and 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This comes a day after the AQI crossed into the ‘severe’ category, marking an alarming rise from 379 (very poor) at 4 pm on Monday to 401 by 10 pm.

Delhi’s winter chill intensified on Thursday, with temperatures plunging to the city’s coldest December day in the past three years. The city also witnessed cold wave conditions, with the IMD extending its cold wave warnings for parts of North India until the weekend.
