Marking a major milestone, Tesla has officially launched in India with the debut of its popular Model Y electric SUV. The first retail outlet has opened at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, with supporting infrastructure including a dedicated service centre and warehouse located nearby.
Tesla’s India Debut: Model Y SUV Enters the Scene
Tesla’s first offering for Indian customers is the Model Y, a mid-size luxury electric SUV that’s been a global favorite. The Indian market will get two versions of this vehicle, both imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, maintaining international quality standards.
Two Versions, Two Price Points
Buyers can choose between:
- Standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
- Long-Range RWD Variant: ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
These are Tesla’s initial offerings, aimed at the premium EV market segment.
Range and Speed That Compete with Luxury ICE Vehicles
Tesla continues its performance legacy with the Model Y:
- Range:
- RWD: Up to 500 km
- Long-Range RWD: Up to 622 km
- Acceleration (0–100 kmph):
- RWD: 5.9 seconds
- Long-Range RWD: 5.6 seconds
- Top Speed: 201 kmph (both variants)
These specs make the Model Y a compelling choice for those looking for luxury paired with electric performance.
High Price Tag Explained: Import Duties Take the Lead
While the Model Y starts at just $37,490 (around ₹32.18 lakh) in the U.S., the Indian version costs nearly double. This is largely due to the 70% import tax levied on completely built-up units (CBUs). However, industry insiders speculate that prices could reduce if Tesla opts for local assembly in India in the near future.
Customization Comes at a Cost: Colours and Interiors
Tesla offers six exterior colours, but only one is included in the standard price:
- Stealth Grey (included)
- Pearl White Multi-Coat
- Diamond Black
- Glacier Blue
- Quick Silver
- Ultra Red
Opting for any colour other than Stealth Grey means an extra cost.
Interior themes include:
- All-Black (standard)
- Black-and-White (extra ₹95,000)
Cabin Features: A Modern Driving Experience
Tesla is known for its sleek, tech-rich interiors. The Model Y is no exception:
- Front Seats: Heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable
- Rear Seats: Heated and power-foldable
- Touchscreens:
- 15.4-inch infotainment system (front)
- 8-inch touchscreen for second-row passengers
- Extras: Ambient lighting, aluminium trim, hands-free powered tailgate, and a front trunk (“frunk”) for added storage
Autonomous Driving Not Yet Available
Though Tesla’s self-driving tech is among the most advanced globally, the Indian variant does not come with this capability yet. However, once regulatory and technical hurdles are cleared, buyers can upgrade by paying an additional ₹6 lakh for the feature.
Financing Made Easy
Tesla is offering EMI-based finance plans:
- RWD Variant:
- EMI starts at ₹1,14,098
- Downpayment: ₹6,20,314
- Long-Range RWD:
- EMI starts at ₹1,29,193
- Downpayment: ₹7,01,115
These plans are intended to make the luxury EV more accessible for Indian buyers.
