Protest Erupts Outside Manipur Raj Bhavan Over Bus Name Row, 7 Injured in Clash With Security Forces

Tensions flared in Imphal on Sunday as a protest march towards the Manipur Raj Bhavan turned violent, leading to clashes between demonstrators and security forces. At least seven women were injured after security personnel fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the crowd. The situation has since been brought under control, according to official sources.

The protest was led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a prominent civil society group, in response to an incident on May 20 involving the alleged removal of the word “Manipur” from a government-run transport bus. COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba condemned the act and demanded a formal apology from Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

The controversy began when a media team traveling to cover the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul district was stopped by security personnel at Gwaltabi in Imphal East district. According to a joint letter submitted by the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and the Editors Guild Manipur (EGM), the journalists were instructed by security officials to conceal the “Manipur State Transport Corporation” signage on their bus. The incident forced the team, which included 20 journalists and officials from the Information Department, to return to Imphal.

The protest was COCOMI’s response to what they called a direct affront to Manipur’s identity. “Such actions are unacceptable and deeply hurt the sentiments of the people. We seek a clear explanation and public apology from the highest office in the state,” said Athouba.

In the wake of public outcry, the Manipur government has established a two-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter and determine whether protocol was violated during the alleged removal of the state’s name.

Authorities have appealed for calm and assured that a fair investigation will be conducted.
