A shocking incident rocked the Bettiah police lines in Bihar’s West Champaran district on Saturday morning when a police constable allegedly shot and killed his colleague following a heated argument over a personal matter.
According to police officials, the accused, Constable Sarvjeet Kumar, 35, opened fire on Sonu Kumar, 36, using his self-loading service rifle (SLR) around 10:20 am. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a personal dispute that escalated quickly.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the two got into an argument, and in the heat of the moment, Sarvjeet opened fire,” said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Vivek Deep. Authorities recovered 11 empty shells from the scene, and the victim’s body was sent for postmortem examination.
Both constables were part of the armed constabulary force, having joined in 2013. They had recently been transferred to Bettiah police lines from Sikta and were assigned to the night patrolling team. They were scheduled to report for duty later that night at 11 pm.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harkishore Rai confirmed the arrest of Sarvjeet Kumar and provided further insight into the sequence of events. “The altercation occurred while Sonu Kumar was getting ready for duty. Sarvjeet was already prepared with his rifle when the argument escalated.”
A senior police official revealed that the root of the conflict may have been personal jealousy, as Sonu Kumar suspected that Sarvjeet had been in contact with his wife, straining their relationship in recent weeks.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local police force and raised serious questions about internal discipline and emotional well-being among officers.
Authorities have assured a thorough investigation, and further action will be taken based on forensic and postmortem reports.
