Hmar and Zomi Tribes Clash in Manipur’s Churachandpur, Situation Remains Volatile

Tensions escalated in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Tuesday night as violent clashes broke out between the Hmar and Zomi tribes, officials said. The unrest comes just two days after a leader of the Hmar tribe was allegedly assaulted by unidentified individuals.

Despite a peace agreement being reached between the two tribal groups on Monday, fresh violence erupted the following night, sources reported. Mobs engaged in stone-pelting, vandalized vehicles, and exchanged gunfire, heightening the already volatile situation in the district.

Local authorities are yet to confirm reports of casualties, including injuries or fatalities. However, the violence prompted the Churachandpur district magistrate to issue two appeals for calm, both of which were ignored by the warring sides.

The conflict adds to the ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, where the Kuki tribes and the Meitei community have been engaged in hostilities since May 2023 over various political and social disputes.

Security forces have been deployed to control the situation, and officials are closely monitoring developments. Further updates are expected as authorities assess the extent of damage and potential casualties.
