Bengaluru: Wife of Techie Who Died by Suicide Gets Bail in Abetment Case

The estranged wife of a Bengaluru-based techie, who died by suicide in December, was granted bail by the city’s civil court on Saturday. The court also granted bail to her mother and brother. The techie’s tragic death, which occurred on December 9, 2024, has sparked a series of legal proceedings involving his family.

The 34-year-old software engineer’s wife and her family were booked under section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment to suicide based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s brother. The techie was found dead in his apartment in Marathahalli, Bengaluru, leaving behind a heart-wrenching 24-page suicide note in which he accused his estranged wife and her family of subjecting him to harassment over legal cases related to dowry and other charges.

In his note, the techie alleged that his wife, on behalf of their minor son, had demanded a monthly maintenance of ₹2 lakh, after initially asking for ₹1 crore, which she later raised to ₹3 crore. He also left behind a 90-minute-long video in which he detailed the emotional and financial toll these legal battles had taken on him. The video and suicide note are currently under forensic examination, including handwriting analysis.

The wife, who was arrested from Gurugram in Haryana, along with her mother and brother, who were nabbed from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, were accused of pushing the techie to the brink of suicide. The family had reportedly harassed him over a prolonged period with multiple legal cases, leading to his emotional and financial exhaustion. In the month of December, the Allahabad High Court had granted anticipatory bail to the techie’s estranged wife’s uncle in the case, arguing that his elderly age and media trial had caused undue pressure.

The techie, originally from Uttar Pradesh, had met his wife through a matrimonial website and they married in 2019. Their marriage, however, faced significant challenges, especially after the couple had a son in 2020. The wife left their Bengaluru home with the child, and their relationship deteriorated further due to the alleged demand for large sums of money from the techie. When he refused to comply, she filed multiple criminal charges against him and his family, including harassment over dowry, attempt to murder, and sexual misconduct.

The techie had reportedly been forced to attend numerous court hearings, traveling between Bengaluru and Uttar Pradesh, which drained him financially and emotionally. His suicide note also included allegations of judicial misconduct, and he even mentioned a troubling conversation with his mother-in-law, who allegedly taunted him about not ending his life sooner.

While the court has granted bail to the accused, the legal proceedings continue, and the victim’s family is seeking justice. The deceased’s lawyer, Advocate Vinay Singh, has stated that they will challenge the bail order in higher courts and continue to fight for justice in this heartbreaking case.

The tragic incident has shed light on the emotional and psychological toll of prolonged legal battles and marital disputes, as well as the impact of harassment on an individual’s well-being.
