Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated India’s first-ever glass bridge on Monday, connecting the iconic Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari. The event marked the silver jubilee of the Thiruvalluvar statue’s unveiling by late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
A Unique Tourist Attraction
The 77-meter-long, 10-meter-wide glass bridge stands 133 feet above sea level, offering visitors a breathtaking view of the sea. Tourists can now walk over the transparent bridge, providing a thrilling experience akin to walking above the ocean.
“This glass bridge offers a spectacular view and allows visitors to reach the monuments faster than by ferry,” a tourist official told PTI. Designed with a bowstring arch, the bridge is built to withstand the saline sea breeze and high humidity, ensuring durability in Kanyakumari’s coastal climate.
Celebrating Thiruvalluvar’s Legacy
The inauguration included a laser light show at the Thiruvalluvar statue and a ceremonial walk by Stalin, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, MP Kanimozhi, and other officials. During the event, Stalin announced the last week of December will be celebrated as “Thirukkural Week” to honor the teachings of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar in his legendary work Thirukkural.
Political Disputes Surrounding the Project
The opening of the glass bridge sparked political debate, with AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami claiming credit for initiating the project during his tenure as Chief Minister.
“Chief Minister M.K. Stalin may have inaugurated the bridge, but it was under the AIADMK government that the project was sanctioned and environmental clearance was obtained,” said Palaniswami. He also noted that the bridge idea was proposed to link the two monuments to enhance Kanyakumari’s appeal as a major tourist destination.

The glass bridge is expected to become a major attraction in Kanyakumari, drawing both domestic and international visitors. By providing a seamless and unique way to explore the two historic monuments, the bridge underscores Tamil Nadu’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while embracing modern innovation.
