PM Modi Meets Brazil’s President Lula at G20 Summit, Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in productive bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, reaffirming India’s commitment to deepening ties with Brazil in crucial sectors. The leaders discussed energy, biofuels, defence, and agriculture, underscoring the importance of robust collaboration to address global challenges.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed strong support for Brazil’s initiative, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. He praised President Lula’s leadership during Brazil’s G20 presidency, highlighting its significant contributions to global dialogue.

“We took stock of the full range of bilateral ties between our nations and reaffirmed our commitment to improving cooperation in sectors like energy, biofuels, defence, agriculture, and more,” PM Modi shared on X after the talks.

Focus Areas of Collaboration

Discussions between the two leaders explored opportunities for enhanced cooperation in renewable energy, biofuels, healthcare, agriculture, defence, and digital technology. According to Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, PM Modi assured India’s full backing for Brazil’s efforts to combat hunger and poverty through global initiatives.

President Lula welcomed PM Modi warmly at the summit venue on Monday, showcasing strong diplomatic ties. Brazil’s leadership in addressing global challenges, including climate change, was also a focal point of the discussions.

Climate Action Emphasized

President Lula called for decisive action at the upcoming COP29 climate talks in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that critical measures to combat global warming must not be postponed until next year’s meeting in Belem, Brazil. “We cannot leave the task of Baku until Belem,” Lula stressed, urging global leaders to prioritize climate action.

PM Modi’s Visit to Guyana

After concluding the G20 Summit, PM Modi is set to travel to Guyana at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This historic visit marks the first by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in over 50 years, further strengthening India’s diplomatic engagement in South America.

The G20 Summit in Brazil has provided a platform for leaders to address pressing global issues, including poverty, climate change, and economic development, fostering international cooperation for sustainable growth.
