12 Civilians Injured in Grenade Attack at Sunday Market in Srinagar

At least 12 civilians were injured in a grenade attack that rocked the capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. The explosion occurred at the bustling Sunday market near the Tourist Reception Centre, causing panic among shoppers who rushed for safety.

The injured, comprising eight men and one woman, were promptly evacuated to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS). According to Dr. Tasneem Showkat, the medical superintendent of SMHS, all the injured individuals are currently stable.

The incident prompted immediate action from local police and paramilitary forces, who rushed to the scene to assist in evacuating the wounded and launching a search operation to locate the perpetrators behind the attack.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the grenade attack, describing it as “deeply disturbing.” In a post on X, he expressed his concern over the recent spate of violence in the region, stating, “Today’s news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the ‘Sunday market’ in Srinagar is deeply disturbing. There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear.”

This attack follows the neutralization of a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, identified as Usman, who was killed by security forces just a day earlier in a separate operation in Srinagar. Inspector General of Police (IGP) VK Birdi reported that Usman was a foreign terrorist involved in multiple violent incidents, including the murder of Inspector Masroor.

The recent violence in Jammu and Kashmir also includes two encounters that occurred on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of several terrorists. These encounters marked a significant escalation in tensions in the region, with the last reported encounter in Srinagar taking place over two years ago.
