Harbhajan Singh Pens Open Letter to West Bengal Government, Expresses Anguish Over Delayed Justice in Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP, Harbhajan Singh, has expressed his deep concern over the delayed justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim in an open letter addressed to West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The letter, shared on Singh’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, reflects his dismay and calls for immediate action in the aftermath of the tragic incident.

The incident in question involves the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on August 9 at the seminar hall of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This heinous crime has sparked widespread outrage and protests across the nation, drawing attention to the safety and dignity of women in society.

In his letter, Harbhajan Singh described the crime as not only a brutal attack on one individual but also a severe assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in society. He emphasized that this incident highlights the deeply rooted issues within society and serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic change and decisive action by the authorities.

Singh expressed his shock that such a crime could occur within the premises of a medical institution—a place dedicated to healing and saving lives—calling it both shocking and unacceptable. He further lamented that more than a week had passed since the incident, yet there had been no concrete action, leading to widespread protests by doctors and the medical community.

The Rajya Sabha MP voiced his full support for the protesting doctors, acknowledging the challenging conditions under which they work. He questioned how medical professionals could be expected to perform their duties with dedication when their own safety is so gravely compromised.

Singh’s letter also urged the West Bengal government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take immediate and decisive action to ensure that the perpetrators of this vile act are brought to justice swiftly. He pointed out that such incidents are becoming alarmingly common across the country, regularly filling columns in newspapers and TV programmes.

The open letter from Harbhajan Singh serves as a poignant reminder of the need for accountability and action in the face of such atrocities, urging both the government and society to stand up against violence and ensure justice for victims.
