Nirbhaya's Mother Demands Resignation of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Over Handling of Rape-Murder Case

Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya, has publicly demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of failing to effectively address the recent rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Devi’s call for Banerjee’s resignation comes amidst growing outrage over the August 9 crime, which she believes has been mishandled by the state government.

In an interview with PTI, Asha Devi expressed her discontent, stating, “As a woman, she (Banerjee) should have taken action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign for failing to handle the situation.” Devi criticized Banerjee for allegedly attempting to divert public attention from the core issue of justice for the victim.

Devi’s comments follow a protest march organized by Banerjee and leaders of the Trinamool Congress, who have demanded justice for the victim and the hanging of the perpetrators. Devi contends that instead of taking decisive action, Banerjee’s efforts to organize protests are a ploy to distract from the issue at hand.

The case has drawn comparisons to the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, which sparked nationwide protests and led to the execution of the convicted rapists in 2020. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the recent crime. Devi has stressed the need for both central and state governments to ensure swift and severe punishment for rapists to prevent such incidents in the future.
