Maharashtra Cyber Police Investigates Fake News Allegation Against Dhruv Rathee Parody Account

The Maharashtra Cyber Police have initiated an investigation following allegations against a parody account impersonating popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, for spreading fake news about Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s daughter clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam without appearing for it.

According to authorities, the parody account, identified as @dhruvrahtee on X, posted a false claim alleging that Birla’s daughter had achieved success in the UPSC exams. Despite the account’s disclaimer stating it is a fan and parody page, and not officially affiliated with Dhruv Rathee, the post sparked controversy and led to legal action.

The complaint, filed by a relative of Om Birla, prompted the Maharashtra Cyber Police to register a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including defamation, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, and spreading misinformation under the Information Technology (IT) Act.

An official statement from the cyber department clarified the nature of their inquiry, acknowledging that while the posts originated from a parody account, they are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
