In response to a complaint lodged by the National Commission for Women (NCW), the Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a Delhi resident for allegedly making lewd and derogatory remarks about Smriti Singh, the widow of late Captain Anshuman Singh, a Kirti Chakra awardee (posthumous).
Captain Anshuman Singh, a brave medical officer serving in the 26 Punjab regiment, tragically lost his life while on duty during a fire incident at an Indian Army ammunition dump last year in July. His heroic actions, including the rescue of several individuals and attempts to retrieve critical medical supplies amidst perilous conditions, earned him the posthumous Kirti Chakra, one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards.
According to police sources, the FIR was filed under relevant sections of the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act. The complaint highlighted the violation of Section 79 of the BNS, which pertains to acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman, and Section 67 of the IT Act, concerning the transmission of obscene material in electronic form.
The NCW took suo motu cognizance of the matter and swiftly moved to demand the individual’s arrest, writing to the Delhi Police Commissioner for immediate action. In a statement, the NCW strongly condemned the derogatory comments and stressed the urgency of addressing such offenses promptly.
Smriti Singh, along with Captain Anshuman Singh’s mother, Manju Singh, received the Kirti Chakra from President Draupadi Murumu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 5 last year, in recognition of Captain Singh’s selfless service and sacrifice.
