During a meeting with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in Washington, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Israel to refrain from escalating tensions in Lebanon. The discussion also focused on efforts to secure the release of hostages in Gaza through indirect diplomacy between Israel and Hamas.
The meeting comes in the wake of public criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused the United States of delaying weapons deliveries. Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces are transitioning from intense operations in Gaza to focusing on the northern border, citing defensive measures.
In the meeting, Blinken emphasized the importance of reaching a diplomatic resolution to ease the suffering of Palestinians and Israeli-Lebanese families affected by the conflict. Tensions have escalated recently, with increased exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanon’s Iranian-backed militant group.
CIA chief Bill Burns also met with Minister Gallant, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to returning hostages to their families. Gallant reaffirmed the significance of the Israel-US alliance in ensuring security.
President Joe Biden’s administration has proposed a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, with ongoing negotiations to bridge differences between Hamas and Israel. However, Netanyahu’s remarks about reduced arms shipments from the US have raised tensions further.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller clarified that while one shipment of heavy munitions remains paused, the US continues to support Israel’s security with ongoing weapons supplies. Miller highlighted the need for long-term stability in Gaza post-conflict to prevent Hamas from regaining control.
