Tragedy Strikes Sivakasi: 8 Dead in Firecracker Blast

In a devastating incident, a firecracker explosion in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, has claimed the lives of eight individuals. The tragedy occurred at a private fireworks manufacturing unit situated in Sengamalapatti near Sivakasi, known as India’s fireworks capital within the Virudhunagar district.

Authorities responded swiftly to the emergency, with police and fire service personnel rushing to the scene to conduct rescue operations. The injured were promptly evacuated to the government hospital in Sivakasi for urgent medical attention. At present, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Initial reports indicate that approximately ten workers were present at the manufacturing unit during the time of the explosion. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased workers. He also assured that relief aid would be provided, pending approval from the Election Commission.

In a statement, Chief Minister Stalin affirmed, “I have immediately contacted the District Collector of Virudhunagar and instructed them to carry out the rescue operations as soon as possible and have also directed to ensure that the injured get proper treatment.”

This tragic incident in Sivakasi echoes a similar catastrophe that occurred in February, where 10 individuals, including four women, lost their lives in an explosion at another fireworks factory in Virudhunagar district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended his condolences and announced financial support through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the affected families.

“It is with a heavy heart that I learned about a mishap at a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar district. During this difficult time, my thoughts are with the loved ones of those who have tragically passed away,” stated the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter)
