In a swift move by the Congress party, Devender Yadav has been appointed as the interim president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, succeeding Arvinder Singh Lovely who resigned just two days ago amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
The announcement of Yadav’s appointment came on Tuesday, with the Congress party confirming that he would also continue in his role as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) incharge for Punjab. This decision follows Lovely’s resignation on Sunday, which was reportedly linked to his discontent with the party’s alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi for the elections.
In a statement, the Congress stated, “Hon’ble Congress President has appointed Shri Devender Yadav as the interim President of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. He will continue in his role as AICC In-charge for Punjab.”
Lovely, in his resignation letter, expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s candidate selections for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. He voiced concerns over the lack of communication and consultation with the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) regarding candidate nominations, highlighting the need to maintain the dignity of the PCC.
“I can’t work like that as PCC President, but I am ready to work as a Congress worker if they allow me to. If they don’t want me, then it is a different case,” Lovely stated, reflecting his disappointment with the decision-making process within the party.
Despite his objections, the party proceeded with the alliance with AAP, resulting in Congress contesting three out of Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha seats while AAP contests the remaining four. This alliance arrangement is part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), while both parties are independently contesting in Punjab.
