Mukhtar Ansari, a notorious gangster-turned-politician, passed away on Thursday night after experiencing a heart attack while in the Banda jail. The 60-year-old had been admitted to the hospital for approximately 14 hours earlier in the week due to complaints of abdominal pain.
According to reports, Ansari’s health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his transfer to the hospital where he ultimately succumbed to the cardiac arrest. News of his death spread quickly, prompting gatherings of people at his residence in Ghazipur.
DGP Prashant Kumar confirmed Ansari’s death based on the medical bulletin from Banda Medical College. Ansari was admitted to the hospital around 8.25 pm, and despite efforts by a team of nine doctors, he could not be revived.
Following Ansari’s demise, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were enforced across Uttar Pradesh to prevent large gatherings. Enhanced police presence was noted in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi districts.
The Samajwadi Party expressed condolences over Ansari’s passing, acknowledging his former role as an MLA. They offered their prayers for his soul and extended sympathy to his grieving family.
This event occurred amidst claims by Ansari’s family members that he was being slowly poisoned while in jail. Earlier in the week, he was hospitalized due to abdominal pain and discharged after a few hours.
The UP prison department had previously responded to allegations of poisoning, stating that Ansari received prompt medical attention after falling in the jail’s toilet. Ansari had been incarcerated since 2005, facing over 60 criminal cases and multiple convictions in recent years.
In March, Ansari was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case involving forged documents for obtaining an arms license. This marked his eighth conviction in Uttar Pradesh courts over the past two years, further complicating his legal situation.
