As tensions escalate in Maharashtra over the Maratha quota agitation, authorities have imposed curfew in Ambad taluka of Jalna district and suspended internet services in Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Beed districts to maintain law and order. The move comes in response to ongoing protests led by activist Manoj Jarange, raising concerns about potential unrest and violence.
According to officials, the internet shutdown aims to curb the spread of rumors and misinformation on social media platforms, which could exacerbate the situation. Additionally, the borders of the affected districts have been sealed as a precautionary measure.
In Beed district, three cases have been registered for agitations without permission, with two individuals arrested for damaging a state transport bus. Meanwhile, in Ambad taluka of Jalna district, where Jarange has been staging a hunger strike, curfew was imposed to prevent any potential law and order issues.
Jarange’s demands center on securing Maratha quota under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category and converting the notification regarding ‘blood relatives’ of Kunbi Marathas into law. Despite the recent passage of a bill providing 10% reservation for Marathas in education and government jobs, Jarange remains steadfast in his demands.
In response to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s warning against testing the government’s patience, Jarange accused Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis of attempting to harm him. He announced plans to march to Mumbai and protest outside Fadnavis’ residence, alleging a poisoning attempt through saline.
The situation remains tense as authorities grapple with the challenge of balancing public agitation with maintaining law and order. With Jarange’s hunger strike and the ongoing protests, the Maratha quota issue continues to simmer, underscoring the complexities of social and political dynamics in Maharashtra.
