In a bid to march towards Parliament, hundreds of farmers faced a roadblock in Noida as police intercepted their procession near the Mahamaya Flyover on Thursday. The attempt to advance towards the capital was met with barricades and heavy police presence, prompting disruption in traffic flow and necessitating diversions on several key routes.
The Noida traffic police had earlier issued advisories urging commuters to seek alternative routes, anticipating significant congestion on arterial roads due to the farmers’ protest. Video footage shared by news agency PTI captured scenes of farmers attempting to breach the barriers erected by law enforcement officers, illustrating the intensity of the standoff.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Yadav outlined diversion routes to ease traffic congestion, directing vehicles from Sector 15 towards Jhundpura to be rerouted via Rajnigandha Chowk. Similarly, traffic originating from Sandeep Paper Mill was redirected towards IGL Chowk in Sector 1 and the Rohan Motors T-point, providing alternative pathways for commuters to reach their destinations.
However, assurances were given that traffic bound for Sector 18, 27, 37, and adjacent areas via Rajnigandha Chowk would face minimal disruption, offering some relief to residents navigating through the affected zones.
The farmers, predominantly from villages in Noida, had announced plans to stage a protest outside Parliament, demanding increased land compensation and improved rehabilitation provisions for affected families. Their grievances revolve around the Uttar Pradesh government’s alleged neglect of their demands, including a 10% share of acquired land for residential purposes, escalated land compensation rates, and permissions for commercial activities on residential plots.
Bharatiya Kisan Ekta Sangh leader Sukhbir Yadav articulated the protesters’ stance, emphasizing their resolve to press for their rights. Despite the logistical challenges and the enforcement measures, the farmers remained determined to voice their grievances and garner attention to their cause.
As the impasse continues, both authorities and protesters are bracing for further developments, with tensions simmering amid the unresolved issues surrounding land acquisition and compensation policies.
